“Life gets better. If you believe in the resurrection, life gets better.” These are the heartfelt words of Fr Bernie Gallagher, a beloved priest who has dedicated more than five decades to his faith and community. Now retired, Fr Bernie continues to inspire those around him with his unwavering optimism and deep spirituality.

Fr Bernie’s journey to priesthood began early. As a boy at St Joseph’s College, Gregory Terrace, he recalls the moment he felt God’s call. “The religious brothers came around with forms,” he shared. “If you wanted to be a priest, you wrote ‘P.’ If you wanted to be a brother, you wrote ‘B.’ I started writing ‘P,’ and I never had any doubt this was what God wanted for me.” Inspired by his parish priest, Fr George Nugent, and a great uncle who was a Redemptorist priest, Fr Bernie embraced a life of service.

Over the next 53 years, Fr Bernie became a cherished figure in every parish he served. He particularly loved being part of parish life, saying, “Involvement with schools, Mass on Sundays, and just the general belonging to the parish – that’s what I miss most.” Now retired, Fr Bernie spends more time in prayer and reflection, grateful for the blessings of his ministry.

Retirement, however, comes with its own challenges. For priests like Fr Bernie, who devoted their lives to ministry, retirement often means adjusting to life without the community and structure of parish work. Many retired priests rely on The Priests Foundation for essential support.

The Priests Foundation provides housing, healthcare, and community to retired clergy, ensuring they can live with dignity and comfort after a lifetime of service. Fr Bernie speaks with gratitude about the Foundation’s work: “We are very fortunate in the Archdiocese. The Priests Foundation has been a great support to many retired priests over the years, and I know that is only possible through the generosity of the faithful.”

With seventy retired priests now under its care, The Priests Foundation’s mission continues to grow. Fr Frank Jones, Chair of The Priests Foundation, highlights the importance of ongoing support: “When priests are in active ministry, they have access to a home and a community. In retirement, many depend on the Foundation for these essentials. Your support ensures they can live comfortably and continue their spiritual journey without worry.”

Fr Bernie’s legacy of service, combined with his catchphrase, “Be happy, be healthy, be holy,” resonates with parishioners and students alike. His story reminds us of the vital role priests play in shaping our faith and the responsibility we share in supporting them when their active ministry concludes.

The Priests Foundation invites you to join this mission of care and gratitude. As Fr Bernie says, “The more you give, the more you get.”
