For a small group of our retired priests in the Archdiocese of Brisbane, home is a modest unit in South Brisbane, shared with fellow clergy, surrounded by books, familiar music, and the steady rhythm of prayer. It’s in these quiet places – filled with memories and friendship – that they live out their later years, thanks in large part to the support of The Priests Foundation.
Fr Frank Jones, Chair of the Foundation, recently shared a heartfelt update on the growing needs of these faithful men who have given their lives in service to the Church. He spoke of his visits to these homes, where each encounter brings a story, a cup of tea, and the deep bond of shared vocation. “As a retired priest myself, I think of these men as my family,” he wrote.
Their needs are humble. Just a modest bedroom and a bookshelf brimming with well-worn titles. But their stories are rich, and their gratitude is deep.
Fr Frank shared that the number of retired priests needing care is growing rapidly. Just last year, nine new priests entered retirement, and their medical and emotional needs continue to increase. Much of their day-to-day support comes through the dedicated work of nurses like Alison. She is more than a caregiver, she’s a friend, a familiar face at the door, and often the only person present when these elderly men face health crises or simply need a hand to hold. As she put it, “It’s not just medical or nursing care that is required, but a kind and familiar voice and a hand to hold.”
But the need is outpacing the current resources. To meet the growing challenge of providing quality care, The Priests Foundation hopes to hire an additional full-time nurse. This would allow the team to continue offering not only professional medical care, but the compassionate, personal presence that makes such a difference in these men’s lives.
Fr Frank invites the faithful to consider a tax-deductible donation to help make this possible. “Every gift, no matter the size, is a loving hand on a retired priest’s shoulder,” he said. “You’re ensuring our retired fathers can live out their days with the comfort, dignity and love they deserve.”
Your generosity today will have an immediate impact. It might mean a timely medical visit, a safe ride to the doctor, or simply the companionship that eases loneliness and affirms a lifetime of priestly service.
