Compassion can change a child’s future

Sometimes the difference between a child reaching their potential and being left behind comes down to one thing: support from a caring community.

For Daniel, this felt like a reality, as he watched his dream slowly slip away.

Described by his teachers as a “compassionate and intelligent boy,” Daniel wanted to attend his local Catholic school, but for his family, that dream was becoming harder to hold onto as they faced circumstances no child should have to worry about.

His father is living with brain cancer. Once full of energy, he is now very unwell as the disease continues to progress. Every day is a battle as the illness takes away things he once took for granted.

To care for him, Daniel’s mother had to give up work and become a full-time caregiver. At the same time, she is raising Daniel and his three siblings. Without a steady income, the family is struggling to manage daily living expenses, medical appointments, and the ongoing costs of raising four children.

As Daniel’s family explained in their application for support: “Every dollar goes to survival, medical appointments, trips back and forth for his dad’s care, and the daily costs of raising four children.”

Daniel understands the strain his family is under. He knew they could not afford school fees, books, or even a uniform, and he didn’t want to add more stress by asking.

But despite these challenges, Daniel remained hopeful.

He is a bright, thoughtful young boy whose values are deeply rooted in his Catholic upbringing. One day he dreams of becoming a lawyer, or perhaps starting a family business and working alongside his siblings. His family knows that a Catholic education would help him flourish, surrounded by teachers and peers who nurture his faith, character, and potential.

This is where the MacKillop Bursary Fund makes an extraordinary difference. Through the support of donors, Daniel was given the opportunity to thrive in his local Catholic School, where he is known, seen, and supported.

The Mary MacKillop Fund helps students from families facing severe hardship attend Catholic schools by covering essential costs such as:

  • Tuition fees
  • Books and learning resources
  • School uniforms
  • Backpacks and other essentials

Currently, the fund supports more than 125 students, helping ensure that financial hardship does not prevent children from receiving a quality Catholic education. Even more powerful, once a bursary is awarded, it can support a child throughout their schooling, or until the family is able to regain stability.

Each year, the number of families applying for help through the MacKillop Fund continues to grow. Applications come from families experiencing some of life’s most difficult situations, including:

  • Serious illness
  • Domestic violence
  • The death of a parent
  • Refugee and migrant hardship
  • Single-parent households under severe financial pressure

What they all share is a deep desire for their children to learn in a community where they are seen, supported, and cared for.

Daniel’s story is just one of many. With the support of compassionate donors and community members, children like Daniel can step into classrooms where they belong – places where their gifts are nurtured and their dreams can grow.

For Daniel’s family, help meant more than financial relief. It brought peace of mind during an incredibly difficult time and gave their son the opportunity to build the future he hopes for.

Because every child deserves the chance to thrive.
